BABY SIGNS

Top 5 Myths about Potty Training

By Linda Acredolo, Ph.D.
Co-founder of the Baby Signs Program

Dr. Linda Acredolo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of California at Davis and an internationally recognized scholar in the field of child development. Based upon research conducted with collaborator Dr. Susan Goodwyn and funded by the National Institutes of Health, she and Dr. Goodwyn co-authored the best-selling book entitled BABY SIGNS: How to Talk With Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk, and founded the Baby Signs Institute.

I remember very vividly what it was like to potty train my two children.  The fact that they are now 28 and 23 shows you what an impression the whole business made on me!  What do I remember the most?  I remember worrying about when to start, how to do it, and how long it would take.  My solution was to buy every potty training book on the market.  These days the search for advice is both easier and cheaper as more and more parents turn to the internet, both for expert advice and insights from other parents.

Unfortunately, however, not all the information about potty training on the internet is encouraging.

NEW BABY - OLDER MOM

Defying the Odds

How I Had a Baby after Age 43 & 5 Years of Loss

Part Two
by Robin Black

Robin  lives in Central New Jersey with her husband Kevin and 3 children...Daniel, 16, Caroline, 12 and Cameron, born March 2, 2009. Her story is one of triumph over tragedy. After many lost pregnancies, she is now ecstatically balancing the disparate lives of her children. She spends her days changing diapers, fielding questions about middle school dances and debating which college her oldest will attend.

(Editor's note:  If you missed Part One of Robin's very compelling article, you can read it now.  CLICK HERE
c
Six months later, I was pregnant again.  This time, though, I was tired and anxious and had trouble sleeping.  I felt sicker than I ever had with my two previous full-term pregnancies.  I was convinced that something was terribly wrong.  And I was not excited about being pregnant.  I lay awake at night wondering why I was tempting fate at my age (now 39).  I had two healthy children.  Why was I rocking the boat?

ELIZABETH SPRAGUE - CROPPED

SIGNING WITH YOUR BABY
Seeing The World Through A Child's Eyes
                                   by Elizabeth Sprague

Elizabeth
is a wife and mother of three boys in Oregon. She taught all of her boys to use infant sign language and continues to share her knowledge with other parents, babies and early childhood educators by teaching classes in her community. You can read her blog at          www.babysignswithelizabeth.blogspot.com

We've all been there; the baby is crying and you have the list of possible solutions in your head. It's called the process of elimination (although there's another one of those when it comes to babies, but that's another article) and it's how we fix the problem when our babies can't tell us what they want or need. Grab the bottle, burp the baby, change the diaper, do that bouncy, rocking thing up and down the hallway.

But what if you didn't have to just go through the motions each time, what if your baby COULD tell you their wants and needs.

WORK AT HOME MOMS

Being a Mom: Balancing Work and Family
                  By Melonie Butler

Melonie  is a wife, mother of three sons and founder of Flexcom Consulting, a boutique firm consisting of talented, flex-schedule professionals who develop solutions for small business clients to be seen, be heard and be known. For more information, visit www.flexcomconsulting.com.

It was November 2008 when I made the decision to leave my corporate marketing job to become the person I had always desired to be. It was a difficult decision. But, it was so worth it.

Never enough time

It was difficult because my income helped support a comfortable lifestyle for my family. To eliminate that income meant we would have to give up some things in order to "make it" on one income. On the other hand, I seemed to have no time for my family any more. With each of my three sons playing sports, participating in extra-curricular activities and camp events, they deserved to see at least two spectators - mommy and daddy.

AMY ALDERSON - GOOD

               WORK AT HOME MOMS

Modern-Day "Old-School" Mom
             By Amy Alderson

Amy resides in Pennsylvania. She is a wife and mother of two young boys. Amy is a part-time instructor at a local college and a marketing communications consultant with Flexcom Consulting, www.flexcomconsulting.com

I'm inspired. Since becoming a mom almost 4 years ago, I have met countless moms on the playground, in playgroups, and at preschool. We would engage in light conversation about our wonderful children, their milestones, their funny quirks, and of course sharing issues, in addition to swapping stories about "what we used to do" as if it were a lifetime ago. Interestingly enough, one thing that I began to realize is that, we are not just MOMS. Whether we recognize it or not, we are teachers, artists, chefs, caregivers, nutritionists, housekeepers, and let's not forget social directors.

SUSAN D. CROPPED
FROM "NONNA'S" HEART
by Susan DeLaurentis

Long Distance Grandma

Susan lives in beautiful Bucks County Pennsylvania.  She runs a successful computer business with her husband and dotes on her five grand kids...some close. Some far away.

I find myself daydreaming about my infant twin grandsons I have yet to bond with.  They are 500 miles away in Raleigh, North Carolina while I reside in Doylestown, Pa.

I was...I am spoiled that my first two grand daughters live only a half hour away by car and I am happy to babysit for Faith, 4 and Jordan, 2 every Tuesday.  I am able to rock them, feed them, spoil them since the day they were born.  I did not have that luxury with the boys, Braylon and Logan.
